Essure was offered as a permanent form of birth control and sterilization for women. It has been found to cause very significant problems and side effects. Some of the side effects are perforation of the fallopian tubes and uterus, persistent pain, excessive bleeding, allergic reactions and hypersensitivity reaction to name a few. Some women have even become pregnant after the Essure device was implanted. Many women have been required to undergo surgical removal including hysterectomies due to the Essure device.
An estimated 750,000 women had the Essure device implanted. Bayer HealthCare and the Essure device are currently under scrutiny by the FDA due to all of the adverse reaction and events that are being reported. Bayer has made an announcement that they will stop sale of the Essure device in the United States by the end of 2018. https://www.self.com/story/bayer-stop-selling-essure-in-the-us
